It has a bit more to do in it and it also introduces you to most of the characters that appear in Holiday Star. If this is your first time with the series, however, I would recommend beginning with the first game. If that’s all you’re after then you should definitely consider picking the game up at some point. It’s more or less what you’d expect the game to be, and that is more Hatoful Boyfriend. I still had a lot of fun, even if it was just hitting the X button to progress the dialogue.

With all this negativity about the game it would be easy to draw the conclusion that I didn’t really enjoy it. That’s quite a thing to write considering the main chapter of the game sees you solving the mystery of who’s stealing all the Christmas trees in the town.

It’s by no means terrible and is still full of laughs, but the whole thing feels slightly less absurd. The narrative is, however, not as good as its predecessor. Missing dialogue isn’t something you want to do, as the writing is still great, despite some careless typos. You can skip chunks of the writing at speed, but you can’t set a custom time so you can read the dialogue without having to hit a button to advance. This might be helped if there was an auto advance option on text, but that still appears to be missing from the series. There are also far too many moments where there is just no sound at all, which just feels bizarre. Sound design is fairly poor, with audio cutting out suddenly, minimal sound effects and no voice over.

Once you’ve seen the way a chapter plays out there’s not really any need to play it again.Īlthough that isn’t the worst thing it does start to draw your attention to other things the series is lacking. This is great on paper, but it does limit the replayability. There’s an overarching narrative, but the game is very much set up to be played in bite sized chunks, a chapter at a time. The game is split in to various chapters, all with their own conclusions. It also does away with the dating element, instead going down a fairly standard interactive novel path. Holiday Star takes you down a far more linear route, with choices in the game making a minimal difference. Things could get pretty crazy depending on which story arc you followed. The first game featured a branching narrative where your choices could take you down various paths. What it fails to do though is add to what was already there. The jokes will still bring a smile to even the saddest of faces and the silliness of it all is made even more wonderful with its Christmas setting. Holiday Star remembers to at least keep most of the base that makes the first game so much fun. All a follow up game needed to do was add a bit more to an already solid base. Its bizarre setting and characters made the more straight-faced moments of the game far more amusing than they would’ve been otherwise.

Hatoful Boyfriend was a surprisingly fun dating simulator with an absurd avian focus and a great sense of humour. If you’re after a silly game that will make you chuckle and you have the choice of this or the original what should you go for? They’re priced the same and feature many of the same characters. That’s the important question here really. How does it stack up against its predecessor though? Much like the best Christmas films (*cough* JingleAllTheWay*cough*) Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star is something that can be enjoyed all year round.

That obviously is a ridiculous assumption. After all, the game is set around the festive period maybe I would struggle to enjoy it outside of that time frame.

When I received the review code for Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star a few weeks after Christmas I wasn’t sure what I’d make of it.
